Rapid Seismic Damage Assessment Model for Europe

Description

The Rapid Damage Assessment model builds upon three main components:

  • A building exposure database for Europe (Gehl et al., 2025), which has been assembled by performing a spatial disaggregation of the EFEHR Exposure model (Crowley et al., 2021), based on the built-up area density (Global Human Settlement Layer, JRC) and the description of macro-taxonomy groups (i.e., less detailed than the GEM taxonomy);
  • Shake-maps (maps of seismic intensity), retrieved from the European ShakeMapEU service (Cauzzi et al., 2018);
  • The seismic damage assessment model Armagedom (Sedan et al., 2013), based on the semi-empirical vulnerability approach by Lagomarsino & Giovinazzi (2006).

Upon the detection of an earthquake, based on the produced ShakeMap, the distributions of damage (EMS-98 damage scale) and loss (injuries, casualties, shelter needs) are computed at the level of 30-arcsec cells, and results are ultimately aggregated at the level of Local Administrative Units.
