The project

Welcome to the GOBEYOND Project

GOBEYOND is a 4-year long European Innovation Action under the Horizon Europe Framework Programme with the aim to develop a Multi-Risk Impact-Based Early Warning System (MR-IEWS). The project is coordinated by the Center of Applied Research in Hydrometeorology (CRAHI) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech (UPC). The consortium consists of 17 institutions and 10 associated partners.

GOBEYOND is on a mission to revolutionize Disaster Risk Management (DRM) by pioneering innovative solutions that transcend the current state of the art. The project is rooted in the understanding that effective DRM cycles demand sophisticated tools capable of assessing risks, anticipating crises, and enabling rapid response to natural hazards.

Our vision is ambitious yet clear: to develop and implement a Multi-Risk Impact-based Early Warning System (MR-IEWS) tailored to support Civil Protection Authorities (CPAs) and first responders. By harnessing cutting-edge technology and collaborative efforts, we aim to equip communities with advanced tools and systems that enhance situational awareness and facilitate swift responses to weather, climate, and geophysical emergencies.

Building on Success

Drawing inspiration from successful initiatives such as ANYWHERE (EnhANcing emergencY management and response to extreme WeatHER and climate Events) and leveraging services offered by Copernicus Emergency Management Services (CEMS), European Flood Awareness System (EFAS), European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), and European Drought Observatory (EDO), we're building upon a legacy of innovation to push the boundaries of what's possible in disaster response.

Our Objectives

Impact-based EWS

Extend the experience of the Impact-based EWS to geological and geophysical hazards (geohazards) based on the legacy of existing solutions in the area of extreme weather events.

Multi-Risk EWS

Convert the present Multi-Hazard Impact-based EWS (MH-IEWS) into Multi-Risk Impact-based EWS (MR-IEWS) able to trigger actionable decisions and supporting the reaction of the citizens through Site-Specific Warnings.

Co-design

Co-design the MR-IEWS prototypes with selected early-adopter authorities and first responders to ensure their integration into existing tools for decision-making and situation reporting to support emergency response at local/regional scales.

International scale

Develop a European-scale MR-IEWS platform with great specificity in time and space, and a MR-IEWS platform adapted to operate in countries of the Union for the Mediterranean.

Demonstrations

Test and improve the co-designed MR-IEWS prototypes in an operational environment on 6 real-time demonstrations during geo and weather events.

Scalability

Design of GOBEYOND MR-IEWS platforms to facilitate their scalability at low cost and their implementation anywhere in Europe and beyond, supporting the implementation of international policy frameworks.

Our Work Plan

The project comprises 8 Work Packages (WPs) collaborating seamlessly to achieve its objectives. Each Work Package contributes unique expertise and resources toward the overall success of the project. These Work Packages work together in harmony, ensuring comprehensive coverage of tasks and objectives outlined in the project plan.
