Global Rainfall Estimation COSPARIN

Product Overview

COSPARIN (Spatial Contribution for Flood Risk Analysis) is a satellite- and terrain-driven QPE/QPF system introduced through an R&D program supported by the European Space Agency and approved by CNES (PREDICT Services). It uses geostationary and polar-orbiting satellite observations fused with artificial intelligence methods to produce rainfall estimates worldwide every 30 minutes at 5 km resolution.

It is particularly relevant to anticipate flash-flood event in areas without dense radar networks.

Use Cases & Applications

COSPARIN has built a strong global evaluation record since 2020, with QPE retrievals assessed across 200+ major hydrometeorological events worldwide, enabling continuous improvement through feedback from various users. In the project it is currently implemented on the EW4Med (Europe and North Africa) and the Alpes-Maritimes area, Province of Chefchaouen, and Cannes, Sospel and Guillaumes pilot sites.

Express interest

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme for research and innovation under grant agreement No. 101121135. Additional funding is provided by the Swiss Government.
