Attica Living Lab

Co-creating tailored disaster resilience solutions in the heart of Greece

The Attica Living Lab was launched to bring together key regional stakeholders in a collaborative space to explore and shape GOBEYOND’s tools and solutions. Focusing on local needs and capacities, the Lab has already enabled meaningful dialogue, feedback loops, and co-creation for multi-risk preparedness and response, particularly in the context of floods, wildfires, and earthquakes.

Stakeholders involved:

Civil Protection Directorate of the Region of Attica

DRAXIS Environmental

Civil Protection Authorities of Piraeus

Civil Protection Authorities of Vyronas

The first face-to-face Living Lab meeting in Attica took place on July 5th, 2024, at the Civil Protection Department of the Region of Attica. Co-organised with DRAXIS Environmental, who is developing the platform for the region, the event brought together over 15 stakeholders from various municipal and regional departments, including representatives from Piraeus, Vyronas, and Voula-Vouliagmeni, as well as the Hellenic Rescue Team and the Fire Department.

The meeting fostered open dialogue, giving special attention to the Attica pilot and the specific vulnerabilities of its focus area, the municipality of Piraeus, centered around the hazards most relevant to the region—including floods, wildfires, and earthquakes—and how GOBEYOND's early warning and impact-based tools could be integrated into current civil protection practices. Participants examined how different systems work and where improvements could be made.

To continue the momentum from the first session, a technical meeting was held between DRAXIS and the Civil Protection Directorate of the Region of Attica. This meeting took place at the Directorate's headquarters in Marousi and involved representatives from all departments. DRAXIS presented the initial version of the GOBEYOND platform, which prompted valuable feedback from the operational teams. The discussion focused on improving the platform's usability and ensuring it responds directly to the day-to-day needs of end-users. Actionable outcomes were agreed upon to guide the next iteration of the platform's development.
