GOBEYOND Newsletter #4 - May 2025

The GOBEYOND project is now 1.5 years into its journey – a period marked by co-creation, innovation, and strong collaboration across Europe! In this edition, we share the outcomes of our 1st Workshop, the Innovation Prize Open Call, exciting updates from our Living Labs, and more.

1st GOBEYOND Workshop

On March 18-19, we held our first GOBEYOND workshop in Seville, Spain, which brought together around 100 stakeholders and experts for two days of insightful discussions, hands-on demos, and knowledge exchange. The event included:

Live demonstrations of local Multi-Risk Impact-based Early Warning System (MR-IEWS) prototypes
Thematic roundtables on risk communication, impact-based warnings, and more
Poster sessions by stakeholders from across Europe

The workshop not only deepened shared understanding among diverse actors but also strengthened the foundation for co-developing innovative approaches that can enhance resilience and preparedness in the face of geo and weather-related hazards across Europe.

Innovation Prize Open Call

The GOBEYOND Innovation Prize Open Call has officially concluded, receiving an impressive 55 proposals from across Europe and beyond. The call aimed to identify innovative solutions that enhance preparedness and response to geo and weather hazards.

Three finalists were selected and invited to present their solutions during a live pitching event in Seville, Spain and the consortium selected FAIR – Forest Fire AI-based Risk Assessment from CIMA Research Foundation as the winning proposal. This open call not only showcased groundbreaking ideas but also strengthened GOBEYOND’s commitment to innovation-driven risk preparedness.

Living Lab Highlights: Local Innovation in Action

The GOBEYOND Living Labs are at the heart of our project, bringing innovation closer to local realities. These labs are vibrant spaces of co-design and mutual learning, where regional stakeholders, scientists, and authorities come together to shape early warning systems that are not only technically robust but locally relevant.

Here’s a glimpse into recent activities from some of our pilot regions:

Cannes, Sospel & Guillaumes (France): SMIAGE organized stakeholder workshops focused on raising awareness about GOBEYOND and gathering feedback to inform platform development.

Zurich & Ticino (Switzerland): MeteoSwiss facilitated workshops to explore how real-life scenarios can benefit from impact-based weather information. The session also clarified data sources and identified key end users of the system.

Attica (Greece): DRAXIS presented the initial platform prototype to the Directorate of Civil Protection. Feedback from representatives across departments helped refine the platform to ensure maximum usability and operational value.

Spreading the Word: GOBEYOND at Key Events

Discover some of our latest activities that are helping us forge partnerships and bring our findings to a wider audience:

Alix Roumagnac, Chairman of Predict Services, spoke at Avignon University’s conference on risk management challenges in the Mediterranean region.

Paul Geoerg from VFDB presented at the "National Congress on Research in Civil Protection" on crowd crushes, terror attacks, and extreme weather.

Aldo Zollo from the University of Naples Federico II presented on Impact-Based Earthquake Early Warning Systems at an event hosted by Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

Spotlight Article: The Campi Flegrei Volcanic Complex

In this thought-provoking piece, Prof. Aldo Zollo explores the geological dynamics, ongoing research, and risk management strategies needed to safeguard the Campi Flegrei Caldera, which has a history of eruptions, ground deformation, and seismic activity.

Collaboration in Action: Spotlight on MedEWSa

Collaboration is key to amplifying impact. For this reason, we have started a collaboration with our sister project MedEWSa, which is developing a Decision Support and Dissemination System to help first responders, policymakers, and planners improve their response to extreme weather events. The project is hosting a participatory Workshop on Risk Transfer Solutions for Climate Disasters on 24 June 2025 in Brussels.
