Pozzuoli

Demonstration overview

The Pozzuoli pilot site is situated in the Campania region of southern Italy, within the seismically and volcanically active Phlegraean Fields area, near the metropolitan city of Naples. With approximately 80,000 residents, Pozzuoli is highly exposed to complex volcanic hazards, including bradyseism (ground uplift) and earthquake swarms. The site is part of Italy’s national red evacuation zone, meaning that preventive evacuation is the only viable protection measure during a major volcanic crisis.

This demonstration focuses on testing an adapted version of the GOBEYOND platform to improve local emergency preparedness and population alerting.

Solution

The Pozzuoli is testing an adapted MR-IEWS platform, focusing on two critical scenarios:

  • Pre-eruptive Phase: characterized by damage from precursor earthquakes and bradyseisms on buildings, occupants and roads
  • Post-eruptive Phase: characterized by damage from ash fall on buildings and roads, in order to address the preparedness for a quick recovery or rehabilitation
The demonstration evaluates how impact forecasting and automatic alerts can enhance Pozzuoli's operational readiness, improve civil protection protocols, and support timely, informed communication with the population.
